Specifics of our LTN area

Specifics of our LTN area

Here we've taken the general guidelines and thought about how they apply to Barnsbury (aka Barnsbury and a bit of St Mary's wards). ‌

  • The Barnsbury & St Mary's LTN is determined by these main roads and railway line (listed clockwise from the north):
    • Holloway Road (A1)
    • Upper Street/Islington High Street (A1)
    • Pentonville Road (A501)
    • Caledonian Road (A5203)
    • Railway line (north of Hornsey Street)
  • The area defined by those boundaries is about 2 km2 (compared with the desired 1 km2) and it would take 35 mins to walk top to bottom (compared with the desired 15 mins) but only 15 mins across. So, compared with the generally preferred size and also with the LTNs already implemented in Islington, this is a larger area, with the north-south distance being the issue. We can see no way to reduce its size without turning an inappropriate road into a boundary.
  • Three bus routes pass through the LTN: TfL route 153, TfL route 274 and Hackney Community Transport Route 812 (re-starting on 16 May after being suspended due to Covid)
  • The area includes a number of historic mini-LTNs (e.g. Thornhill Square Gardens, Cloudesley Square, etc.) and filtered or one-way streets (e.g. Brooksby Street, Barnsbury Park, College Cross, Richmond Avenue, etc.)
  • Some of the boundary roads are important 'destination roads' (e.g. the shops, and restaurants on Upper Street and The Cally)
  • The southern end of Liverpool Road is a very sensitive area:
    • The Angel shops and Chapel Market attract a high footfall
    • The taxi rank narrows and pollutes this section
    • Streets nearby are extensively used for parking by motorists visiting the shops and using the tube
  • The double roundabout at the Offord/Hemingford/Roman junction would now be considered inappropriate for this residential area. Once most of the traffic is removed, the space it occupies presents an opportunity for community use.

But that's only a start, we are sure you already have points to raise and ideas about what needs doing.  Look out for news from the Council about the Barnsbury & St Mary's Engagement and Design process and how you can get involved. Or subscribe to this group (there's a big red button floating at the bottom right hand of this page) and we'll let you know as soon as we know.‌
